The goal of control medications in asthma symptom management is to manage your symptoms every day and prevent flare-ups.

Inhaled corticosteroids such as fluticasone, mometasone, ciclesonide, flunisolide, beclomethasone or combination Inhalers that contain an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) may be helpful for long-term asthma symptom control.

Combinations such as fluticasone with salmeterol, budesonide with formoterol, mometasone with formoterol are examples of combination inhalers. There are other oral medications for long-term control of asthma symptoms called leukotriene modifiers that include montelukast, zafirlukast and zileuton. The FDA approved Omalizumab (Xolair®, an injectable drug) as a treatment for allergic asthma for people who do not respond well to conventional therapy.
