Marks-Mohiuddin Method

What is the Marks-Mohiuddin method?

Lankenau's own Dr. Gerald Marks' pioneering colorectal surgery techniques led to an historic collaboration with radiation oncologist Dr. Mohammed Mohiuddin in the early 1970s. Together they developed a revolutionary treatment approach to rectal cancer that involved preoperative radiation along with sphincter-saving surgery that alleviated the need for colostomy. This approach produced a dramatic improvement in cure rates and wide acceptance of this clinical method around the world.

The Marks-Mohiuddin method is a preoperative radiation treatment strategy for rectal cancer that promotes sphincter preservation and has allowed 93 percent of Lankenau's patients to avoid a colostomy bag, well below the national average.

Dr. John H. Marks, son of Dr. Gerald Marks, now leads in the same field with minimally-invasive, laparoscopic surgical techniques resulting in a new range of options for sphincter preservation.
