Pioneering a new knee

Wellness
Patient Story

Bob, a tractor trailer driver, was pulled over to the side of the road to check on some maintenance issues on his vehicle when he was hit by an SUV. Though he was grateful to have survived the accident, he was left with multiple fractures and needed both legs amputated. Even before he arrived at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, he knew the road to recovery would be a long one.

The therapy team at Bryn Mawr Rehab prepared a customized rehabilitation experience for Bob. So custom, in fact, that Bob became the first civilian in the country to complete rehabilitation using the PowerKnee, a prosthetic technology that had previously only been used by the Department of Defense. From walking down the hospital’s hallways to walking down local streets, Bob’s care team went to new lengths to make sure he was back on his feet.
