Bryn Mawr Rehab provides a comprehensive approach to cancer rehabilitation offering inpatient and outpatient programs to help patients function at their highest level. Working closely with each patient and their medical and oncology specialists, our team identifies functional impairments and designs a personalized rehabilitation plan to address the impact of cancer and treatment side effects.

Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital's 148-bed, state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation hospital offers a cancer rehab program that enables patients experiencing functional impairments related to cancer and cancer treatment to receive comprehensive rehabilitation services from our specialized team before, after or while continuing cancer treatment.

Our patients receive a minimum of 15 hours of therapy each week, generally three hours of combined physical and occupational therapy at least five out of seven days. When a patient has difficulty tolerating this intensity, the therapy may be spread out more evenly across the week. Additional services, such as higher intensity physical and occupational therapy, speech pathology, psychology, cognitive retraining, recreational therapy and other services are provided based on our assessment of each patient’s individual needs.

Results

Functional outcomes

On admission, patients in our Cancer Rehabilitation Program need maximal assistance to complete activities of daily living, including getting dressed, walking and getting in and out of bed. This means they can complete less than 50 percent of the tasks on their own.

On average, by discharge most patient require only moderate assistance to complete activities of daily living. This means our patients can complete more than half of each daily task, but still require some physical assistance for most tasks.

Discharge

Most patients who receive intensive, inpatient therapy as part of our comprehensive cancer Rehabilitation Program are admitted from an acute care hospital. Prior to their injury or illness, most individuals were living at home, some worked and some were retired.

Following discharge from Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, 64.7 percent of our patients were able to return home; 13.9 percent required ongoing care at a skilled nursing facility; and 21.4 percent were re-admitted to an acute care hospital due to complications.
