Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS)

About minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery often includes laparoscopic approaches where surgery is performed through small incisions (cuts) with less damage (and quicker healing) to the body. It may also include robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery, which is also done laparoscopically but with the additional assistance of a 3D-magnified view and robotic tools to help your surgeon perform with extreme precision. Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery can also be performed vaginally, leaving no incisions on the body.

Surgeons at Main Line Health are board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and some are fellowship-trained and experienced in managing complex gynecologic conditions. Beyond their clinical expertise, they bring genuine compassion and personalized treatment strategy to you and your loved ones.

What to expect

Types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery

The fertility-sparing, gynecologic surgery techniques we use include:

  • Hysteroscopy: used to view and diagnose problems with the uterus. This can also be used in biopsy and myomectomy.
  • Laparoscopic and hysteroscopic myomectomy: used to view and remove uterine fibroids, preventing the need for a hysterectomy.
  • Laparoscopic excision and/or ablation of endometriosis, ovarian cysts or ectopic pregnancy: the surgical removal of tissue while keeping organs intact.
  • Hysteroscopic lysis of adhesions: the surgical removal of scar tissue.

Benefits and risks

In many cases, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery prevents the need for you to undergo a hysterectomy, which is a major procedure. Minimally invasive surgical approaches are also a great option for most patients because they’ve been shown to:

  • Reduce blood loss
  • Minimize pain, infection and the use of narcotics
  • Shorten the length of hospital stay
  • Reduce rates of complications

Laparoscopy and minimally invasive techniques make risks associated with surgery rare, but it’s still important to be aware of the following possible risks:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Surgical injury to uterine wall or nearby organs
