Choosing weight loss surgery

The cutting-edge weight loss procedures offered at Main Line Health (MLH) have the potential to drastically improve your quality of life and extend your overall lifespan. Not only can bariatric procedures reverse the course of nearly 30 different health issues that were previously considered incurable, such as heart disease, sleep apnea, and diabetes, but they can also prevent additional health problems.

“In terms of preventative health, bariatric surgery helps prevent heart disease, it helps prevent strokes, it reduces the risk of cancer in the future, and it’s been proven to increase the longevity of the average person who’s overweight,” says Richard Ing, MD medical director of bariatric surgery at Main Line Health.

Unfortunately, 90 percent of the time, people who try to shed weight via diet and exercise alone do not succeed. In addition, medications can only do so much; on average, they’ll only cut about five to 10 percent of a person’s weight. Even when they do work, they are costly and not often covered by insurance.

Finding the best weight loss options

Main Line Health is committed to giving each and every patient the tools not only to lose weight, but also to keep it off for the long haul, says Ing.

“Our program is unique because we stress education and preparedness,” he adds. “A lot of people can [undergo] the surgery, but if they don’t have the background, the education, and the expectation of what changes have to be made to sustain, they’ll gain their weight back or they won’t lose any weight.”

It all starts with preparation. Before you decide on a weight loss surgery option, your provider will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine the best procedure for you, your body, and your health. Our specialists assess everything from your diet, exercise, and mental health to your medical history and heart, endocrine, and gastrointestinal health. Our team will work closely with you to help you understand all of your weight loss options and feel confident every step of the way.

Prioritizing long-term care

The support doesn’t stop once the procedure is over. We understand the importance of post-procedure support and follow up to ensure each patient sees the best bariatric surgery results possible.

In fact, each surgical patient returns for checkups at two-week, two-month, six-month, and one-year intervals following the procedure. From then on, our team asks patients to come back once a year to ensure everything is still on track.

On top of that, each patient has access to our bariatric support group that’s facilitated by an on-site professional psychologist along with an online support group where patients can interact with each other 24/7 to share their personal successes and challenges.

If you’re thinking of pursuing surgical weight loss but don’t know where to start, the bariatric team here at Main Line Health is available and ready to address your questions, concerns, challenges, or goals.

About the Comprehensive Weight and Wellness Program

Main Line Health’s Bariatric Center is part of our Comprehensive Weight and Wellness Program, which was established to address the disease burden of obesity in our community. The program provides expertise in all evidence-based medical and surgical approaches to achieving a healthy weight, with a focus on helping patients reduce obesity-related health risks, improve overall health and quality of life, and commit to a healthy lifestyle.

The Comprehensive Weight and Wellness Program is under the leadership of metabolic and bariatric surgeon Richard Ing, MD, and obesity medicine specialist Stephanie McKnight, MD. In 2019, the center welcomed Samantha Witte, MD, metabolic and bariatric surgeon.
