Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH)
Dealing with abnormal uterine bleeding can be difficult and frustrating. Many patients try initial treatments such as medication, hormone therapy, physical therapy and neurostimulation. But if severe symptoms persist, laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy could be the right choice to relieve your pain and help you get back to a better quality of life.
What is Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy?
Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy (or LAVH for short) is a procedure using small incisions to remove the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and/or ovaries. Laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy allows the surgeon to have a clear view of the uterus by inserting a camera through tiny incisions in the abdomen. The surgeon is then able to perform precise surgery by controlling miniature surgical instruments.
Who needs LAVH?
Talk to a doctor you trust if you think laparoscopic hysterectomy might be right for you. Women with large fibroids, certain types of cancer or previous abdominal surgeries may not qualify, but you may be deemed a good candidate if you have the following:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Uterine fibroids
- Uterine prolapse
- Cervical or uterine cancer
- Pelvic pain
What to expect from LAVH
For a LAVH, you'll either undergo general anesthesia. The surgeon then makes a small incision(s) in your abdomen to insert the tiny laparoscopic surgical instruments for removal. Your entire or partial uterus is removed through a small incision made in the vagina.
After the procedure is complete, you'll be monitored to ensure no complication occurs. LAVH is typically outpatient, meaning you’ll likely go home the same day.
Risks and benefits of LAVH
As with any surgery, it's important to be aware of the possible risks associated with LAVH. These can include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Bowel blockage
- Urinary tract injury
- Blood clots
Successful LAVHs can also provide helpful benefits such as elimination of abnormal bleeding and reduced risk of developing uterine and cervical cancer.
