Endometrial Cancer
What is endometrial cancer?
The most common type of uterine cancer is endometrial cancer, which forms in the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus that sheds monthly when a woman menstruates. Endometrial cancer is more prevalent in post-menopausal women, but the disease may also affect women with certain risk factors, such as:
- Being obese
- Being over 50
- Having diabetes
- Having high blood pressure
- Never having been pregnant
- Taking estrogen (hormone replacement) alone, without progesterone
Women who have hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) or who have a family member with HNPCC are also more at risk for endometrial cancer.
Symptoms of endometrial cancer
Women who have endometrial cancer may experience symptoms such as:
- Bleeding after menopause
- Bleeding between periods
- Pelvic pain
- Watery or bloody vaginal discharge
Endometrial cancer is considered curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages.
