Cancer-related Fatigue Rehabilitation

Outpatient therapy for patients having difficulty performing daily activities due to extreme fatigue during or after cancer-related surgery, chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Fatigue is a common effect of cancer and its treatment. It can occur regardless of exertion and is often not relieved by rest or sleep. Cancer-related fatigue therapy is available at all Bryn Mawr Rehab outpatient rehab locations.

Symptoms of cancer-related fatigue include:

  • Decreased endurance
  • Reduced energy or whole-body tiredness
  • Shortness of breath after light activity
  • Pain
  • Fatigue after prolonged bed rest
  • Decreased concentration
  • Cognitive impairments

Treatments may include:

  • Exercise, education and mentoring, including comprehensive home exercise program
  • Fatigue management and energy conservation education
  • Physical modalities such as heat/cold therapy, and soft tissue and joint mobilization (manual manipulation)
  • Core body strengthening
  • Cognitive fatigue management

Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

Breast cancer rehab is available at our outpatient rehab locations in Exton Square, Media, Newtown Square, Wynnewood and King of Prussia.

Symptoms may include:

  • Lymphedema
  • Fatigue, weakness or poor endurance
  • Pain and postural changes
  • Numbness in hands
  • Scar adhesions (bands of scar-like tissue) in the chest wall
  • Shoulder pain and loss of range of motion

Treatments may include:

  • Complete decongestive therapy (CDT)
  • Compression bandaging
  • Scar and adhesion therapy
  • Fatigue management and energy conservation education

Head and Neck Cancer Rehabilitation

Outpatient therapy for patients who have been diagnosed with a number of malignancies, including cancer of the mouth, nose, throat and salivary glands. Head and neck cancer rehab is available at our outpatient rehab locations in Newtown Square and Wynnewood.

Symptoms may include:

  • TMJ dysfunction (the temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull)
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing or speaking clearly
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Reduced attention and mental sharpness
  • Neuropathy (nerve damage)
  • Balance/vestibular (inner ear) disorders
  • Cancer-related fatigue

Treatments may include:

  • LSVT LOUD™— a specialized speech therapy program to help patients use their voice at a more normal volume
  • Cognitive and language therapy
  • Multi-dimensional voice analysis and treatment
  • Trach coordination and care
  • Balance training
  • Functional movement analysis and muscle training
  • Postural assessment and training

Gynecologic, Genitourinary and Colorectal Cancer Rehabilitation

Outpatient therapy for patients of any gender with pelvic floor dysfunction — weakened or damaged muscles, ligaments and/or nerves in the abdomen and pelvic floor. Rehab services are available at our outpatient rehab locations in Collegeville, Exton Square, Media, Wynnewood and King of Prussia.

Symptoms may include:

  • Increased urinary frequency and urgency
  • Pain and sciatica of the lower back, hip, sacroiliac (joints that link the pelvis and lower spine) and pubic symphysis (the joint between the pubic bones at the front of the pelvis)
  • Abdominal pain related to bloating, constipation, scar tissue and surgery
  • Pain with sexual intercourse, tampon insertion and gynecological exams
  • Tail bone, low back and genitalia pain with prolonged sitting
  • Feelings of incomplete bladder or bowel emptying
  • Hard or small stools, decreased frequency of bowel movements
  • Pain with urination
  • Urinary and fecal incontinence
  • Pain, weakness or incontinence pre- and post-natal, or after genitourinary or rectal surgeries

Treatments may include:

  • Fluid and dietary management
  • Assessment and treatment of pelvic muscle weakness
  • Biofeedback training to help find and strengthen pelvic muscles or assist in relaxing overstimulated muscles
  • Electrical stimulation therapy to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, decrease pain or desensitize an overactive bladder
  • Bladder retraining to manage urinary frequency and urgency
  • Exercise programs that strengthen the pelvic floor and help control urgency

Lymphedema Management

Outpatient therapy for patients who experience swelling and blockages in the soft tissues of the body following cancer or other treatments to the lymphatic system. Most often this occurs after removal of lymph nodes or radiation therapy. This accumulation of fluid can affect self-image as well as the ability to complete daily tasks. Lymphedema management is available at our outpatient rehab locations in Exton Square, Media, Newtown Square, Wynnewood and King of Prussia.

Symptoms may include:

  • Swelling, heaviness and tightness
  • Aching and discomfort
  • Limited range of motion
  • Infections
  • Indentation that lingers when skin is pressed

Treatments may include:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage or massage
  • Multi-layer compression bandaging
  • Compression garments
  • Exercise
  • Skin care education to prevent injury or infection
