Types of wounds and conditions treated at the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Centers
We treat a variety of conditions that lead to skin breakdown and injury, including:
- Leg and foot ulcers (sores) caused by diabetes or medical conditions that impair blood circulation through the arteries or veins
- Pressure ulcers caused by sitting or lying in one position for too long
- Tissue injury caused by radiation therapy for cancer, such as injury to the jaw, dentition (teeth), breast, bladder, intestines, rectum or skin
- Wounds associated with lymphedema (swelling in a leg or an arm caused by a buildup of fluid)
- Wounds caused by burns or trauma
- Non-healing surgical wounds
- Other non-healing wounds
Our nurses, physicians, clinicians and clinical staff begin with a review of your medical history. An examination and assessment considering all factors that impact healing help determine your individualized care plan. This thorough consideration prior to treatment sets our patients up for successful healing. Our patients often have underlying medical conditions—diabetes, neuropathy, arthritis, venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial disease—that can affect healing. A thoughtful and continually monitored, individualized treatment plan is paramount.
Wound Healing & Hyperbaric therapies
At Main Line Health we offer therapies to relieve pain and other symptoms caused by your wound. We want to help your wound heal as quickly as possible, prevent complications, and keep the wound from returning. Our therapies include:
- Infection control measures or behaviors
- Topical wound care
- Moist wound healing regimens
- Advanced specialty wound dressings
- Wound protection/off-loading
- Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT)
- Compression wraps and therapy
- Lymphedema management
- Surgical removal of dead tissue
- Skin and tissue grafting
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) serves an important role in wound treatment. It is administered via our center's monoplace chambers where you breathe 100 percent oxygen while atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. HBOT delivers high concentrations of oxygen to the bloodstream and surrounding tissues. At Main Line Health Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Centers, HBOT does not replace other methods of treatment. It acts as complementary therapy for patients with complex or non-healing wounds or tissue damage caused by infection or prior radiation therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps to:
- Stimulate new tissue growth and new blood vessel formation
- Decrease edema (fluid buildup in tissues)
- Fight infection
- Improve the effectiveness of antibiotics
Why Main Line Health for wound healing?
Multi-disciplinary approach
Healing problem wounds often requires a combination of treatments. Our team takes a collaborative approach to your care, involving other specialists as needed to optimize healing of your wound.
Thorough wound evaluation
In addition to carefully examining your wound, our wound specialists will investigate the cause or causes of the wound as well as any health factors that may be hindering wound healing. Specialized testing also may be done, for example to check the quality of your blood flow.
Customized treatment plans
You will receive a treatment plan designed to address the specific type of wound you have as well as any factors or health conditions that may impair wound healing. This starts with a review of your medical history and assessment of your physical health that may affect healing. Your individualized plan will include regular visits to the Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center where we will treat your wound and evaluate your progress.
Education about healing and preventing wounds
During your treatment, you and your family members or caregivers will be taught how to care for your wound at home and about lifestyle changes that can help improve healing. You will also learn how to prevent wounds from recurring.
Support for your treatment plan
Our wound team will coordinate all aspects of your care, including scheduling consultations with other specialists and arranging any recommended services, such as home care or delivery of medical equipment, wound dressings, or supplies.
